“Sky Above Clouds” — January 24, 2021

I have recreated and inspired by one of my favorite painters and one of her top ten most famous pieces, “Sky Above Clouds.” O’Keeffe was an American artists who painted nature into a way that reflected how it made her feel. Most of her known works are paintings of enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes and she has been recognized as the Mother of American modernism.

I choose to use “Sky Above Clouds” as my first attempt at making “code art” because of the geometric layout of O’Keeffe’s painting. I enjoy the simplicity of her work, specifically this one, and I’m drawn to anything with pastel colors. Through my own art background knowledge, I was able to break apart the pieces and simply “Sky Above Clouds” in a few different processes. The first step, obviously, was the find the right colors, and I did so by using a color picker. I chose each color as went on, starting at the top of O’Keeffe’s paining, creating rectangles from top to bottom, representing the sky, sunset, and the water. The next step was to recreate, what I’m assuming are the clouds . To do this, I created 30 rows of ellipses all varying in sizes. Starting at the bottom, with bigger ellipses, I continued making them smaller and smaller.

Overall, Id say my first artwork isn’t too bad! The trickiest part was how long the process took. I found it fairly simple creating shapes and selecting colors, it just took some getting use to when it came to Identifying exactly where they needed to go on the canvas.
